AI Policy
The journal “American History and Politics” upholds the principles of academic integrity, transparency, and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in the preparation and publication of scholarly works. This policy has been developed in accordance with contemporary international standards of academic publishing and the recommendations of leading scientometric databases and publishing practices, including Web of Science and Scopus. Its purpose is to ensure transparency in the use of AI technologies for authors, reviewers, editors, and readers.
Use of AI by Authors
Generative AI systems may be used by authors only as auxiliary tools in the preparation of manuscripts, for example to improve language, structure, or readability of the text. However, such tools must not replace human critical thinking, scholarly analysis, or interpretation.
Authors bear full responsibility for the content of the submitted manuscript. This includes the obligation to verify the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of any material generated or processed with the assistance of AI, as well as to thoroughly edit the text so that it reflects the author’s own scholarly contribution, argumentation, conclusions, and interpretations.
If generative AI has been used during the preparation of the manuscript (beyond routine grammar, spelling, or punctuation checks), authors must disclose this in a dedicated AI use statement. This statement should specify the name of the AI tool or model used, the purpose of its use, and the extent of the author’s oversight and control over the generated output.
If AI constitutes part of the research methodology, this must be clearly described in the “Methods” section, including an explanation of how the tool was applied within the research process.
Use of AI in Images and Visual Materials
The journal does not permit the use of generative AI systems or AI-assisted tools to create or modify images, illustrations, or other visual materials included in submitted manuscripts. Such modifications include adding, moving, obscuring, or removing elements within images.
Only basic technical adjustments (such as changes to brightness, contrast, or color balance) are acceptable, provided that they do not alter the meaning of the image or obscure any information present in the original.
An exception may be made only when the use of AI for image generation or analysis forms part of the research design or methodology. In such cases, authors must provide a detailed description of the process, including the name of the AI model or software used, its version number, any relevant extensions or modules, and the developer.
Requirements for Reviewers and Editors
Manuscripts submitted to the journal are treated as confidential documents. Reviewers and editors are prohibited from uploading manuscripts or any parts thereof to generative AI services.
The peer-review process, manuscript evaluation, and editorial decision-making must be conducted exclusively by humans. Generative AI tools must not be used to analyze or review submitted manuscripts.
Authorship
AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of scholarly works. Authorship implies responsibility for the content of the publication, the ability to verify the integrity and accuracy of the research, and the capacity to approve the final version of the manuscript—functions that can only be performed by human researchers.
Policy Violations
Failure to comply with this policy may result in the rejection of the manuscript during the review process or the retraction of a published article in accordance with the editorial policies of the journal.
